Mate Value and Mate Retention - 1 - Running Head: MATE VALUE AND MATE RETENTION [in press, March 2009, Personality and Individual Differences] It’s Not All about Her: Men’s Mate Value and Mate Retention

چکیده
Men may have evolved psychological mechanisms that motivate mate retention behaviors to prevent their partners from being sexually unfaithful or defecting from the relationship because these events are likely to have inflicted reproductive costs on males over human evolutionary history. In the current research, 235 women provided information about their own and their long-term partners’ mate value relative to alternatives, as well as information about their partners’ mate retention behaviors. Men’s mate value is a better predictor of men’s mate retention behaviors than is women’s mate value. Specifically, men of higher mate value perform more benefitprovisioning and fewer cost-inflicting mate retention behaviors than men of lower mate value. The discussion notes limitations and highlights directions for future research.

متن کاملHusband's esteem predicts his mate retention tactics.
Men sometimes enact mate retention tactics to thwart a partner's infidelity or prevent their defection from the relationship. These tactics include low-risk acts that render the current relationship more attractive by bestowing benefits on the woman, as well as cost-inflicting acts that render defection from the relationship risky or dangerous for her. Previous research has linked men's mate re...
متن کاملMate value and mate preferences: An investigation into decisions made with and without constraints
Studies have long investigated similarities and differences in men’s and women’s mate preferences. This study sought to expand on previous research by investigating whether mate value moderated participants’ design of mates. Using both a budgeted and a non-budgeted mate design task, we investigated the effect of mate value on the design of a mate. We found that mate value consistently predicted...
متن کاملMen's perception of women's attractiveness is calibrated to relative mate value and dominance of the women's partner
We tested the hypothesis that men are particularly sensitive to individual differences in the attractiveness of women of the same mate value as themselves and less sensitive to variation among women of lower or higher mate value. We first assessed sensitivity to variation in women's attractiveness by asking men (n=148) to choose the more attractive of two photographs of the same target woman (n...
متن کاملDo mate preferences influence actual mating decisions? Evidence from computer simulations and three studies of mated couples.
Evolutionary research continues to discover new features of human mate preferences, but the downstream consequences of these preferences for mate selection have been insufficiently explored. Some have inferred that stated preferences have few behavioral consequences given seemingly weak effects of preferences in predicting mating outcomes. Here we test this inference with data from simulated ma...
